Amplifying the Voices of the Residential Care Sector
At Geco Connect, we’re fortunate to work alongside passionate professionals who are committed to improving outcomes for children and young people every day.
As part of our new Voices of the Sector series, we’ll be sharing insights, perspectives and thought leadership from respected voices across children’s services, safeguarding, education and care.
Our aim is simple. To give greater visibility to the conversations that matter, encourage reflection, and help share knowledge that supports those working across the sector. By amplifying expert voices, we hope to contribute to a stronger, more connected community that continues to put children and young people at the centre of everything it does.
Our first contribution comes from the substack of Dr Claudine Duberry, Strategic Safeguarding Consultant, who reflects on an important question facing safeguarding professionals today.
Safeguarding work is designed to protect children.
However, in some cases, the system itself begins to shape the trajectory of the case in ways that are not always fully recognised.
Processes increase.
Meetings multiply.
Documentation expands.
Yet clarity does not always improve.
Professionals may begin to respond not only to the child’s circumstances, but to the activity of the system itself.
Decisions can become influenced by:
• procedural expectations
• differing professional interpretations
• the need to reach resolution within defined timescales
In these environments, it can become difficult to distinguish between:
• what is happening in the child’s life
• and what is happening within the system managing the case
This does not reflect a lack of commitment from professionals.
It reflects the complexity of safeguarding environments operating under pressure.
The question worth holding is:
At what point does the system begin to shape the case more than the child’s lived experience?

Safeguarding systems exist to protect children.
They remain effective only when the child remains at the centre of every decision.
Dr Claudine’s reflections highlight an important challenge for everyone working within safeguarding and children’s services. While robust processes are essential, they should always serve the child rather than become the focus themselves.
At Geco Connect, this principle is central to our own thinking. Technology should reduce administrative burden, support professional judgement and help teams spend more time focusing on children and young people, not navigating unnecessary complexity.
